Tension headaches, also known as muscle contraction headaches, are the most common type of headache. In fact very few people have manage to escape experiencing this problem at some point in their lifetime. As the name itself indicates, the tension headache is often associated with some type of psychological distress. The tension headaches are believed to be linked to the increased tension in the scalp muscles.

Most parts of the skull are covered with a layer of muscle. Contraction in these muscles can lead to a reduced blood flow and believe to cause the tension headache. In general, there really is tenderness about the cranium during the occurrence of these headaches.

The description of a tension headache is often referred to as a “tight band” about the head or almost a “viselike” sensation. The headache may be a throbbing pain including symptoms of nausea and vomiting.  Some neurologists have mention that this is an indication that there is a continuum between muscle contraction headaches and migraine headaches.

Although the psychological aspect of these headaches has been emphasized, they can also occur without any serious psychological stress or underlying psychological issue.

Tension headaches are not life threatening and they also do not cause any prolonged disability. It usually responds very well to medication. Understanding tension headaches will help you to clearly see the distinction between tension headache and migraine.  To alleviate tension headaches, the recommendation is proper body movements to avoid increased neck muscle stress and spasm.

In addition, it is also beneficial to perform directed neck exercises to reduce pain and increase flexibility and range of motion. This can often help in the prevention of exacerbations and future flare-ups.
