Trigeminal Neuralgia or Tic Douloureux Headaches

Trigeminal neuralgia is quite a common condition which somehow mainly impacts older people. The headache pain is of a lightning or shooting style and may usually last for only a few seconds however may recur in a repetitive manner.

Frequently when a trigger zone such as some parts of the mouth or face is stimulated, the trigeminal neuralgia headache pain is often confined to one side of the face and it usually occurs below the eye although, in some cases, the forehead can be equally affected.

This ailment is caused by the irritation of the nerve fibers that is near the base of the brain. Sometimes though, tumors of this nerve or compressive lesions of the surrounding tissue may also cause this type of issue.

Luckily there is quite an effective treatment for trigeminal neuralgia which is the medication called Tegretol.  However there are also some cases which cannot be treated by this medication and hence it may be necessary to destroy nerve fibers through a surgical procedure.
